Evaluation for Quiz show

When i first heard we had to create our own Quiz show i was a little scared. But once we got into the flow of things and started to get use to th equipment involved it became easier.
We did a few pratice runs with the last groups script, this didnt go that well because we didnt really under most of the question and the script wasn't put well togeather.
Then we decided to try and use ours. This went terribe, the reason for this is because our script didn't make sence and on top of that it didnt interact with the VT's. After the practice had been done and everyone went home, me, stuart, and laruen stayed behind and had a look though the script to see what we could change. After a long talk and some changes we gave the changed script to laruen to create the finished piece for our filming day. The day came and im am gald to say all the touches we did to the script really worked well and it all flowed nicely.
When it came down to the day that we had to shot the real thing, this got alittle tense, the reason for this is because our host didnt show up on time. When he finally got there we start the practices. It went really well.
On the first half of the show i was appointed as the assisant director, this ment i had to time in the Video clips and also make sure i made the calls when the VT's were ready. I found this a little less chanllenging then i thought it would be. I believe the reason for that would be because i pictured the job having more then a stop watch.
The first half went by really fast and i think everyone did really well. The Video clips could of be put togeather abit better but it wasn't the end of the earth. After we had, had a small break (10 minuets) everyone got put into there second persitions. I moved my way onto the floor. I was chosen to be floor manager, this was great fun. I loved ordering people around and using the headset. The power was unreal.
The second half didnt go as smooth i thought because we had a problem with one of the VT's. lucky it was sorted and our host recovered very well.
The show ended well and i think bobby did an amazing job as our host.
If i ever had to do this project again i would made sure thaty the script was perfect first, instead of waiting till the last day. I would also change certain Vt's so that they all flowed nicely.
My most favourite time during this assignment must be the floor managers position. Many because having that power was good. But also being in the knowing, when i say this i mean the floor manager has to know what is going on constently unlike the camera men, they dont need to know there is someone outside the room. They just focus on there angles and shots.

my journal on what i did on the set.

week 1
During the first week we were divided into small groups and from these small groups we each assigned our self a role i choose technical manager. I worked along our post-production manager to make sure that our VT were film able. Also we discovered which round we would be making for the live show, ours was the sport round.

week 2
On this week our major problem was the name of our quiz show. We managed to come up with 'Culture City'. As soon as this was done we decided on a logo, and the format of the set. Since i was the technical manager i didn't really get to do much thoughout this week, but i helped where i could.

week 3
During week three i found myself with nothing to do alot of the time so I asked the set designers if i could help paint the set, they agreed. I worked on the drawing of the building and then helped finish off the painting.

week 4
This week we finished off the flats and began rehearsals using the last groups script. We each rotated at different roles within the studio, this was really fun as it gave us the chance to have ago lots of different roles. I started on camera and found it really easy to get the hang off. But my overal chosen choice was to be the Floor Manager, i liked the controll and the real of people having to listen to what i had to say. After everyone had gone me, laruen, and stuart all sat down and read though our script, it was not going well. After a long talk about it, we decided to step in and mark down notes and other ways to improve. I am so glad we did this because if we hadn't the quiz show wouldn't of been such a success.

week 5
We finally found out which role we be doing in the live show and I was picked to be the assistan director and the floor manager, i was so happy. We did many a rehearsal to get ourself ready for the main production. We filmed the quiz show live at the end of the week, I did my job well and was praised for the controlling factor involved.

i took some work for Mark and stuart on my blog because i needed to be reminded of what we did and how we did it. I also took the pictures from stuart because i had lost mine.

techical rehearsals

From these technical rehearsals we learned that our buzzers sounded too similar and we had to find a replacement for one of the buzzers. we argreed to instead to have a dog toy ball that made a squeaky noise, and a bell. Another problem we discovered was that our VT weren't in the right place on the DVD and this meant we had to edit our script and running order. However we also found that the technical rehearsals helped us improve all our skills at framing and changing from camera shots, it also help us get sound levels just right and when to cut from the VT inserts back to the studio which improved how well did in the LIVE shoot.

rehearsal and recording practice

Before we recorded our quiz show as we did a few rehearsals. for these rehearsals we each took it turns to be guests and we run through how the show would work.It was important to do these rehearsals to work out if we had techincal problems or anything wrong with our questions like them being too easy or if it was going to be possible to have buzzers in our quiz show.Recording practice allowed us to pull together as a group as well, giving us more comfindance that our show would work.

The script is most important thing for the quiz show it contains techincal information for the director and DVD operators to look at, as well as the dialogue of the host and information about vision and audio inserts lengths for the Sound, DVD operators and for the assistant director to keep track off on behalf of the director. The script also mention which camera shots will be used for opening of the show, as well as listing all the AD LIB shots the director is looking for in the rest of of show. below is an example of a TV quiz show script.

lighting a set

We went about plaining the lighting by placing the set in the studio and using five people around it to represent our four guests and host. We discovered that the best way to light the set and our host/guests was to use 3 point lighting.3 point lighting is when you have a key light that tends to be a powerful spot light (tungsten light) aimed at your subject, this creates a shodow down one side to counter this you have fill light facing the other side of the subject (cool lights). After you lit the subject add another spot light (tungsten light) behind the subject to bring the subject out from the background, this sometimes creates a halo effect on the top of their heads if the subject is a person, however this fine because brings them out from background which looks better on camera.

planning the set

When designing a set for us on TV, colour is the most important to think about.
Different colours are associated with different reactions on the audience, such as red being associated with danger or urgency, blues softening the screen as well as giving the illusion of more space.
This last point was one we thought about when designing our set. We decided to use greys, purples, blues and blacks.
We also decided on a city scape design to keep in line with the name of the show, Culture City. We kept the theme consistent throughout the titles, stings and other mise-en-scene.

We used 5 flats to provide a background to the on screen action and by using the colour scheme we chose the flats give depth to proceedings, giving the show a touch of class and professionalism.

Every little detail is important on set, as even though you hope your audience is entertained by the on screen action, the set actually controls the theme and overall feeling of the show.
